External exhibits currently include a fascinating 2000 year old ancient Japanese ceremonial bell in the Curators Choice exhibition.
Housed in the library of Irelands most revered University, the book of Kells draws visitors from around the globe daily. The illuminated manuscript dates back from around 800 though some section date as far back as the 7th Century. It was stolen in 1007 and the thieves removed the bejewelled cover and threw the rest of the book into a bog from which it was recovered. When Cromwell annexed Kells in 1652 the book was sent to Dublin for safekeeping where it was presented to Trinity College in 1661 where it has remained since.
